31 DAYS OF COFFEE MUGS (2020): Ten Great Grinch Coffee Mugs

Everyone knows Dr. Seuss' The Grinch Who Stole Christmas and anyone who knows and loves the classic Christmas story will want to add one of these fun coffee mugs to their collection.

THE STORY & HISTORY

The Grinch Who Stoles Christmas lives alone near a fictional town named Whoville. He hates both the people who live there and Christmas. In the town lives a little girl named Cindy Lou Who who loves Christmas and the spirit of Christmas and goes about trying to reform the Grinch.

The story has seen many versions but was first published in 1957 as both a book and a magazine story.  It became an animated cartoon on television through the now classic television special starring the voice of Boris Karloff in 1966. In 2000, there was a live action version starring Jim Carrey.  In 2007, it was made into a musical. In 2018, it was released again as an animated version starring Benedict Cumberbatch. Finally, in 2020, it was released once more as an animated movie starring Matthew Morrison. 

THE COFFEE MUGS

I did not have to look far to find some interesting Grinch-themed coffee mugs and I am happy to share them here as number 14 in my 31 Days of Coffee Mugs series. You'll find cups here by Dept. 56, Vandor, Williams Sonoma and Lohtu Ceramics. 

DEPARTMENT 56 MUGS

Shown above are three fun Department 56 Grinch coffee mugs. If you'd like a collection of similar but different mugs, this series would be a great choice and these three are just a few from the series.

VANDOR GRINCH COFFEE MUGS

Shown below are two of Vandor's recent Grinch-themed mugs. Vandor has created a number of uniquely barrel shaped mugs that include the Naughty or Nice mug and the face shaped or sculpted mug shown below them. You will find all of Amazon's Vandor Grinch mugs here.

WILLIAMS SONOMA GRINCH MUG

I also found this more classically styled Grinch mug from Williams Sonoma. I gather that it was a part of that company's line of the Grinch Who Stole Christmas items, which has been discontinued. If you'd like to add this mug to your collection, you'll have to use eBay's Saved Search feature and wait for one to show up. VINTAGE GRINCH MUGS

I looked for vintage Grinch coffee mugs and was unable to find any older pieces. It would appears that famous franchises like this one were not producing movie merchandise in support of their endeavors in the 1950s and 1960s.  However, there is a Hallmark Grinch mug that is somewhat vintage that is available on eBay. If you're after the Hallmark Grinch mug, you will find it here on eBay.

ART POTTERY GRINCH GREEN MUGS

The final mug that I will share with you here today is a beautiful handmade art pottery mug from Etsy. It is for those who want to have a mug in the color of the Grinch but that that is a little more subtle in design. I love all of the mugs on this page but this is, in my opinion, the nicest one. If you appreciate a handcrafted piece of pottery like this one, you will find it on Esty in Lohtu Ceramics' store by clicking right here. Lohtu calls the color moss green but I think it is a great substitute for Grinch green, too! Of course, if it is not green you are after, Lohtu makes this mug, which is dishwasher and microwave safe, in a variety of other very nice colors. How to pick just one?

31 DAYS OF COFFEE MUGS (2020): Anthropologie Buoyant Letters Mug

It turned out that Anthropologie's Buoyant Letters coffee mugs were very popular. They are handsome pieces featuring an off-white background with blue water and horizon themed images and letters. 

I love the idea that with mugs that have an initial letter you can have a personalized mug for all of the members of your family in your cupboard. No more mixing up mugs. Of course, you can just have one for you.

These mugs are stoneware and Anthropologie says they are dishwasher and microwave safe. They measure 5 1/4 inches tall by 4 inches wide with a slight variations in size.  They will hold approximately 20 ounces of your favorite hot and steamy beverage.

Since these initial letter mugs are retired, the best place to search for them is eBay where you will find them available for the time being both new and used. You can click here to find the buoyant letters mugs that you need.

31 DAYS OF COFFEE MUGS (2020): Vintage McCoy Smiley Face Mug

Here is the mug that everyone needs this year, the year that challenged all of us to stay safe and be happy. It is a vintage 1971 McCoy coffee mug and unlike some vintage mugs, it is readily and affordably available from many resellers on eBay.

McCoy's line of pieces included mugs, planters, banks and cookie jars. It is sometimes referred to with the word ‘Smiley’ and other times with the word ‘Happy.’ Whichever way you care to call it, it was very popular in the 1970s, which may account for why it so easily found today.

These mugs measure approximately 4 inches tall and will hold 12 ounces of your favorite hot and steamy beverage. I think that they also make wonderful display pieces whether you want to put a plant in yours or use it as a flower vase or even as a pencil holder.

31 DAYS OF COFFEE MUGS (2020): Molly Hatch Animal and Mythical Creatures Mugs

For the eleventh day of Christmas...no, it's actually the eleventh day of my 31 Days of Coffee Mugs series, I bring you another enduring favorite by Molly Hatch whose Christmas mugs I wrote about yesterday on this post. Like the ones on yesterday's post, these mugs are also fun and whimsical though these ones include animals and mythical creatures. They're done in an attractive off-white color with a blue stripe near the top and a blue pen-and-ink illustration.  

Molly Hatch's artwork can be found on everything from furniture to jewelry to ceramic pieces like that scene on these handsome mugs, which feature mythical critters that include unicorns, jackalopes, narwhals, sloths as well as real creatures like grasshoppers, llamas and dogs. The dog breeds have included the ever popular Dachshund, French Bulldog and Corgi.

Originally these drawings were produced by Molly Hatch in collaboration with Anthropologie but it seems that your best source for these retired mugs now is eBay.

31 DAYS OF COFFEE MUGS (2020): Molly Hatch Christmas Mugs

I originally discovered Molly Hatch's Christmas mugs through Anthropologie. I loved their simple charm and the creamy white and red colors. However, I have since found them at other locations including on eBay, which often serves as the best resource when something is out of production.

I have found ten different images including a pair of ice skates, a pair of Christmas stockings, a swag of mistletoe, an elf-like creature declaring happy holidays, a bounding reindeer, a decorated Christmas tree, a bow of holly, a gingerbread boy, a snowflake, a vintage-style Santa and a candy cane. I am not sure if that is all of them and I would hazard a guess that there are more to come.

Whether you collect a theme or you want a collection of Christmas-themed coffee mugs, I think that these present great options. They are done in a few different sizes, which makes them in my mind at least more pleasing to gather and display as a collection.

The artist, Molly Hatch, lives in Massachusetts where she began her work in a pottery studio. The images that decorate her pieces are drawn from her life as the daughter of a painter and a dairy farmer. She created her first line of products in 2010 and her whimsical approach appeals to many.

31 DAYS OF COFFEE MUGS (2020): Alexa, Make Me Coffee Mug

For those attached to Alexa, I am pleased to have discovered for the eighth day of my 31 day mug series this fun "Alexa Make Me Coffee" mug by Brooke and Jess Designs. It is a ceramic mug designed to look like an enameled tin camping mug with, of course, the textual reference to Amazon's Alexa.

Alexa, for those who don't know, is Amazon's virtual assistant that interacts with users by interpreting voice commands for playing music, making lists, setting alarms, streaming podcasts, playing audiobooks, providing the news, the weather and so on. 

This Alexa mug is ceramic and it is both dishwasher and microwave safe. It measures 5 inches by 5 inches by 6 inches, holds 14 ounces of your favorite hot and steamy beverage and it is readily available from Amazon by clicking right here.

31 DAYS OF COFFEE MUGS (2020): Chess Mug for The Queen's Gambit Fans & Players

Netflix's new hit series, The Queen's Gambit is leading the a surge of interest for the game of chess. Netflix announced when the series hit 62 million viewers that it was the platform's most-watched scripted series ever. 

Apparently, searches for 'how to play chess' and demand for chess games has skyrocketed. eBay reported a 273 percent increase in searches for 'chess sets' immediately following the series’ release. Indeed, I recently sold the one and only chess set that I had in my eBay store. I was surprised but I should have seen it coming. 

Unfortunately in this case, Netflix series do not arrive with a plethora of merchandise, the way movies sometimes do. I went searching for an official The Queen's Gambit coffee mug but came up empty handed. I even struggled simply to find a NICE chess-themed mug and not a modern day creation that simply had a chess quote or black and white picture on it. In the end, however, I found this attractive stoneware mug from Mara. 

Mara's mug measures 5 inches by 3.75 inches and holds 16 ounces of your favorite steaming hot beverage. Conveniently, it is dishwasher and microwave safe.

Reviews of this design in particular are few but other mugs by the company in the same shape have good reviews with a couple of things to watch out for. First, be aware of the size as some people found the mug bigger than they expected and second, be aware of the irregular nature of these hand crafted pieces. Items that are handmade often vary slightly from piece to piece in terms of quality and painting style.

31 DAYS OF COFFEE MUGS (2020): Toy Story Mugs

Disney Pixar's Toy Story needs no introduction. The award-winning movie series debut in 1995 and was a huge hit everywhere including in our household where there were two little boys who loved Woody and Buzz.  Since then, the familiar characters have entertained us through a total of four movies with a rumored number five on the way.  

We all know that 2020 has been a year of challenges because of the virus. In the movie world, this has meant the closing of theatres and a reduction in film production. Will there be a fifth movie? The answer to that question is still unknown so we will just have to wait and see if our beloved characters will return.

Anyway, today is Day 5 in my current 31 Days of Coffee Mugs series and I am thrilled to present these handsome limited edition Toy Story coffee mugs. They were originally sold through the Disney Store in commemoration of Toy Story's 20th Anniversary. They feature the original sketches and concept art for Woody and Buzz Lightyear.

31 DAYS OF COFFEE MUGS (2020): Chalkboard Coffee Mugs

Why not put your coffee mug to work? Use it as a form of communication!  Grab your chalk and get ready to play with your coffee today. 

For the fourth day in my 31 DAYS OF COFFEE MUG 2020 series, I bring you chalkboard coffee mugs. The exterior surface is used as a blackboard allowing you to pick up a piece of chalk and personalize the mug in any way you like.

31 DAYS OF COFFEE MUGS: Personaliteas Mug (2020)

For day THREE of the 31 DAYS OF COFFEE MUGS, I bring you a novel-tea. That is, a fine bone china mug from artist Jumble Sailor in a design called Personaliteas. It’s perfect for anyone who loves their tea in a mug, like me! 

The design on the mug was Jumble Sailor’s entry into a tea towel design competition by ToDryFor’s tea towel competition in the United Kingdom. It is made by Beast in Show and available through Jumble Sailor’s Etsy store. 

Vintage inspired, I love the illustrations. You can drink your cuppa tea with Camilla Chamomile, Olly Oolong, Brian Breakfast and friends and of course, I won’t tell if you put coffee in your mug. The design is all around the mug and even features a friend called Rosy Lee in the bottom. She’s there reading the leaves whether or not you used tea leaves (or even drank tea).

31 DAYS OF COFFEE MUGS: The Golden Girls (2020)

I remember my mother watching the award winning television series The Golden Girls in the 1980s and I know I watched it sometime after that, too. 

The show ran for a total of seven seasons and offered up a whopping 180 episodes. An amazing 27.2 million people tuned in to the series finale in 1992. 

It starred four legendary actresses: Beatrice Arthur, Betty White, Rue McClanahan and Estelle Getty, all of whom are gone now except for Betty White, who is 98 years old as I write this in 2020. 

The premise of the show was four senior citizen roommates who managed one way or another to live in the same house and stay friends. 

The series has had incredible staying power. All these years later, it is still widely beloved. It is popular with older folk who may or may not have watched it originally as well as with younger folk who were not even born when it first aired. The Queen Mum loved it and Sir Laurence Olivier did, too. 

The BBC calls it the most treasured show ever saying it is the "ultimate pop culture goodie: more naughty-but-nice" and describing the characters as 'fiercely funny, unashamedly soppy, brazenly glamorous (1980s style) and bravely outspoken.'
