You Will Love These Handsome and Whimsical Taylor & Ng Coffee Mugs

Taylor and Ng is a 51-year old American company created by the Chinese American artists Spaulding Taylor and Win Ng. The firm is still in operation today and takes pride in creating useful and attractive products for everyday life. The Taylor and Ng coffee mugs certainly meet that goal although I am certain that they are popular because they feature whimsical images of animals including some slightly naughty ones.

Vintage Taylor and Ng mugs are sought after. However, the company continues to make mugs so you can also purchase a new, reproduction mug if you prefer.

The vintage MUGS are hot collectors' items right now, with individual mugs ranging in value from $10 to $180 with that last figure being the most expensive Taylor and Ng mug sold on eBay in the 90 days preceding the creation of this page in August of 2011. Because I know you are curious, I will tell you that the mug that sold for $180 is a white 1979 mug with a blue picture of Le Chat Aile - a winged cat.

Taylor & Ng Le Chat (Cat) Coffee Mugs

Cat lovers who appreciate Ng's work will love Le Chat (cat) mugs and, of course, you don't have to hold out for the rarest $180 mug. You can have a different version from a more recent year for much less than that figure. Click here to see multiple Le Chat Taylor & Ng mug options on eBay. 

Taylor & Ng L'Escargot and Cheval Mugs

There seems to be something about the vintage mugs in the blue color for the blue Taylor & Ng l'escargot and cheval mugs also command top dollar but, once again, there are other choices available including more recent reproductions, other images and other colors. Taylor & Ng Orgy / Naughty Coffee Mugs

These Taylor & Ng orgy or naughty coffee mugs generate a lot of discussion on and offline. (Taylor & Ng calls the reproduction of these naughty mugs animates, I am not sure if that is what they originally called them.)

People often have these cups in their hands without realizing exactly what those creatures are up to in the image until someone points the activity out to them. Fun and playful, these mugs fortunately leave much to the imagination.

Although popular, these naughty cups are generally more affordable with the most expensive one sold in the last 90 days being a naughty alligator coffee mug, which eBay seller CTCulture had the good fortune to sell for just over $50 once you factor in the cost of shipping.

Modern Taylor & Ng Coffee Cups

Be aware that there are two types of Taylor & Ng mugs...the vintage, collectible ones and the reproduction, brand-new ones. Some available from Amazon are misleadingly titled vintage although they are really reproductions. Be aware, too, that people are sometimes disappointed with the new mugs, especially when they were expecting the character of the older ones. I love the Taylor & Ng classy critters mugs. (As shown here in a picture via Happy Flower Head on Flickr.) They are more colorful than most of the others and may appeal to you more or less because of that fact. They are attractive and feature fun names and illustrations like Rascal Rabbit, Doggy Do Good and Kitty Katfish. You can find the classy critter collection on Amazon by clicking right here.

31 DAYS OF COFFEE MUGS: Vintage B. Kliban Cat Coffee Mugs

The famous B. Kliban cat was created in the 1970s as a cartoon character and went on to appear on a host of merchandise including coffee mugs…so for this entry in the 2016 version of 31 DAYS OF COFFEE MUGS, I bring you this vintage "Love a Cat" B. Kliban coffee mug. Whether you are just window shopping, searching for a Kliban mug or you are collecting all of them, I know this one will make you smile.

A few of my favorites include the B. Kliban-themed travel mugs, which include Hawaii and San Francisco; the athletic mugs, including a colorful football mug in which Kliban declares his love of football by clinging to it; and the Christmas mugs that include Bah, Humbug! Peace, Season's Greetings, Pizza on earth and Christmas antlers. Of course, I also love this simple Love a Cat mug and the Sigma Taste Setter figural mugs, the high class cat mug, the chef cat mug...

Some of these mugs are rarer than others. They are, after all, vintage mugs from the 1970s and 1980s. A few of the most valuable ones sold in December, 2015, were the New York themed 'I Love New York' mug that sold for $77 and the 'Big Cat Pink' face and 'Love that Java' mugs, which sold for $50 around that same time frame. Today, you can find Kliban's New York and L.A. themed mugs here on eBay.

MUGS ON MONDAY: You've Cat To Be Kitten Me Right Meow Coffee Mug

Some mugs just make you or maybe I should say me smile. That's the category that the mug for this MUGS ON MONDAY post fits into.

The expression, "You've Cat To Be Kitten Me Right Meow" on this coffee mug is just plain fun and I love how the maker, TooLoud, put the words into the form of a black cat.

It's perfect for any cat lover's morning cup of coffee, don't you think?

Vintage B. Kliban Collector's Items

The artist B. Kliban created Kliban the ultimate cartoon cat in the 1970s and his black and white cat achieved huge popularity from the publication of the first book and was eventually featured on every type of merchandise conceivable from calendars and t-shirts to mugs and cookie jars. (Shown above is the first B. Kliban book called Cat.)

The book The Collectible 70s says that official B. Kliban merchandise, that is merchandise marked BKliban, was only manufactured for about 6 years. Since Kliban the cat has retained his popularity, merchandise bearing his likeness is highly sought after, especially the older pieces marked BKliban. After the artist's death, other manufacturers produced pieces using Kliban's likeness and some of those items will be marked JKliban or BKcats. Find your copy of The Collectible 70s here on Amazon.

I love the striking teapot shown above, which was previously sold (and no longer available) on eBay by seller lkg0vvu.  However, that one has since been sold. You can, however, check for it and see what other Kliban teapots are available here on eBay. What Kliban collector wouldn't like to own a themed teapot?

I rarely find Kliban merchandise myself when I am sourcing but at one point, I did have the fun cookie jar shown above, which was manufactured by Sigma and Tastesetters in the shape of a pair of pants with not one but rather three Kliban the cat figures on top.
