McDonald's McNugget Buddies 2023

As an adult who has long ordered a McDonald’s Happy Meal for herself, I was intrigued to discover that McDonald’s, in conjunction with an American artist named Kerwin Frost, launched an adult Happy Meal in December of 2023. 

Those Happy Meals all included one of six McNugget Buddies that related to some part of Frost’s childhood and one even represented the artist himself. 

On the McDonald's website, Kerwin Frost said “I’ve loved McDonald’s since I was a kid. I even had my own Ronald McDonald doll that I brought to picture day at school, and it was my dream to collect all the McNugget Buddies...Now, coming up with my own special set of Buddies—each one representing different aspects of self-expression—it’s unreal, a dream come true.”  

When the original McNugget Buddies were released in 1988, there were ten of them each with an interesting personality and mix-and-match outfits.

The six characters include: Kerwin Frost, the Mayor of Frost way; Don Bernice, the Wise Stylist; Uptown Moe, the Neighborhood Hero; Waffutu, the Curious Optimist; Brrrick, the Cool Guy and Darla, the Dreamer and yes, the 2023 version comes complete with mix and match outfits. 

There is also a rare Golden Nugget. What is the significance of the Golden Nugget? Just the luck of having one, I suppose. There is no prize attached to it unless you decide to sell yours on eBay where the little guy seems to be selling from $10 to $150 plus shipping. The box, which is covered in Frost’s work, includes the toy nugget and either a 10-piece Chicken McNuggets or a Big Mac, a French fries and a beverage. Find your Buddie McNuggets here on eBay where you can find the Golden Nugget Buddie, single Buddies or collections of all six.

There was also, by the way, additional Kerwin Frost McNuggets merchandise. Unfortunately, it is all sold out right now but yes, of course, you will can find some of it here on eBay!

I spotted the new Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer on Twitter today and I wasn't the only one, LOL. I loved it, how about you?

As someone who has written many posts about coffee mugs, I do eye coffee mugs whenever a character in a television program or a movie shows up with one, like the Big Hug Mug on True Detective or this vintage Fire-King Jadeite mug on Buffy and the Vampire Slayer.

Anyway, I was not the only one to notice Doctor Strange's statement with his Oh for 🦊 Sake coffee mug and it is generating buzz on Twitter:

Take a trip back with me to a place where the tradewinds blow, where the pace is calm and where the Hawaiian punch flowed or if a bit of realism is required, to my home in Canada one hot summer day in the late 1960s on grocery day when my Mom served one of those big cans of ice cold Hawaiian Punch...

I do and I'd have to say he is firmly entrenched in the memories of my childhood. Hawaiian punch anyone? What is Hawaiian Punch?

Hawaiian Punch is a fruit punch drink with 5 percent real fruit juice that is now owned by the Dr Pepper Snapple Group, Inc. It was originally invented by A.W. Leo, Tom Yates and Ralph Harrison as an ice cream sauce in 1934 and was later made into a tasty drink when it was mixed with water.

In 1934 Hawaiian Punch was developed in California in a garage and in 1950 the 46 ounce can was distributed to grocery stores. Punchy was born in December of 1961 and appeared in his first television commercial in 1962.

In 1999, Dr. Pepper/Seven Up purchased Hawaiian Punch and thought of re-using the Punchy mascot. It was thought that Punchy was a rather violent character for a product aimed at youth since his reputation is based on his punch. Great consideration was given to see how or even if Punchy could be used in a less offensive manner. Teenagers remembered the original version of Punchy which meant that he was still a valuable asset to the company. It was determined that his main appeal was his uniqueness and his punch which was not so much an act of violence as a metaphor for overwhelming refreshment.

In 2003, Punchy had a makeover to appeal more to the youth of the day.

From Abba to Zoom: A Pop Culture Encyclopedia of the Late 20th Century

From Abba to Zoom is a pop culture encyclopedia of the late 20th century that was written by David Mansour. If you love pop culture, there is a lot of interesting information between the covers of this book about the world in the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and even 1980s. It's pretty groovy.

It is a book for Boomers and Gen Xers. Did you watch The Huckleberry Hound Show, Johnny Quest or Sesame Street? Were you a fan of Farrah Fawcett, James Bond, Lost in Space, or Woodstock? If so, you will enjoy this book with more than 3,000 alphabetically arranged references.

It was published in 2005 so it definitely won't have any recent pop culture but, because it is an older book, nor will it break your pocket book. Used copies are quite affordable, as is the Kindle version of this book. If you want a new hard copy, you will have to pay a bit more since it is an out of print book.

Doctor Who Target Books

I've been busy listing the first of a number of Doctor Who book sets in my eBay store. It is going to be a long process and I am trying to commit to listing six books a day. Wish me luck!

UPDATED TO SAY: ALL OF THE BOOKS IN THIS SERIES HAVE BEEN SOLD.

This huge collection belonged in a sense to my son because they were purchased for him.  However, he never had the opportunity to read them and now he is moving to Seattle and leaving them behind to be sold on eBay...

The first set that I am listing is the Target Books paperback series, which was published between the years of 1973 and 1991. I read that Target started with new releases of the books by Frederick Muller and that the last three books were released by Virgin books after they took over Target.  Those last three titles were The Power of the Daleks and The Evil of the Daleks by John Peel and The Paradise of Death by Barry Letts.

I'm learning a bit as I work my way through these books.  If you have already read them, you no doubt know more about the history of them than I do and probably remember them fondly from years gone by.

I had the opportunity to meet a customer who purchased three books from me shortly after I started on this Doctor Who adventure. He was thrilled to find the titles that he needed to complete his collection.  He purchased The Rescue by Ian Marter and The Planet of Giants and The Wheel in Space by Terrance Dicks, his collection is now complete and my collection no longer has those titles available. It was really rewarding to see his appreciation for the books.

All of the books that I have listed so far have been in pretty good condition with yellowing as befits older paperback books and a small irregularity at the top of the spine, which was caused by the removal of a small sticker. I expect the rest of the books in this collection to be in the same condition.

By chance, I stumbled across The Target Book: A History of the Target Doctor Who Books by David J. Howe on Amazon.  I would love to have a chance to look at it but it appears to be a very hard-to-find book, which translates directly into it being very expensive on Amazon.  

31 DAYS OF COFFEE MUGS: John Wayne Mugs

I’ll start by saying I am only a bit familiar with the works of the late actor John Wayne. I’ve never been a huge western movie fan but I will admit that the few I have seen, I have enjoyed and they include the original John Wayne version of True Grit.

I am, however, totally enthralled by pop culture and the continued popularity of John Wayne so for the 26th entry in my 31 DAYS OF COFFEE MUGS series, I have chosen John Wayne.

There is actually a coffee mug or rather a series of mugs that were produced specifically for John Wayne that are worth thousands of dollars each.

The story behind them is that John Wayne had them made and then gifted them directly to family, friends, cast and crew members. One side of the mug carried the name and an image from the movie. The other side, carried a greeting.

On December 6, 2014, one of these John Wayne mugs sold at a live auction on eBay for $11,000. One side of that mug had an image of Rio Bravo, a 1959 movie, and the other side read, “Joyce, From Duke.”  Here's a screen shot of the auction listing:

The eBay seller who sold it says it was being sold on consignment directly from the estate of the daughter of Joyce Burnett, who was the assistant to Rio Bravo director Howard Hawks.

I gather it must be a rare example because it fetched an unprecedented amount when it sold and this despite the fact that it had a lot of wear on the handle.

Most of these personalized John Wayne mugs sold on eBay in the last year sold in the $2,000 to $5,000 range.

If owning one of those mugs is out of your range, but you would like to have a John Wayne mug, I have found a few nice options.

A MAN'S GOT TO HAVE CREED

My favourites included a brown Vandor mug that read, “A man’s got to have a creed, a code to live by.” It was a simple handsome, manly mug, perfectly suited to the subject matter.  It appears to be retired now but you can look for it on eBay by clicking right here.

DON'T SAY IT'S A FINE MORNING OR I'LL SHOOT YA

I also like this mug by Midsouth Products, which reads, “Don’t say it’s a fine morning or I’ll shoot ya.” I like it because it carries a morning sentiment perfectly reminiscent of the Duke and it makes me smile. You can find this mug on Amazon by clicking right here.

Ziggy Safari Springbok Jigsaw Puzzle

When I'm not busy working on eBay, blogging or any of my other online projects and I don't want to do housework, I often turn to a jigsaw puzzle for a diversion. We have one pretty constantly on our coffee table. This week I finished a 500-piece Springbok jigsaw puzzle called Ziggy Safari that features the famous 1980s character on safari in Africa.

Ziggy, for those of you who don't know, is a little bald guy with a lot of friends in the form of pets who is constantly facing some misfortune or another. Pop culture, computers and modern life problems are subjects that Ziggy frequently meets in his walk of life.

Ziggy first appeared in a book in 1968 called When You’re Not Around. He appeared in his first newspaper strip in 1971 and has gone on to fame and fortune since then, appearing in his own television special, called Ziggy’s Gift, on calendars, collectables and yes, even on jigsaw puzzles.
 

Personally, I remember a small plush Ziggy that was given to me as a Christmas gift. It is even possible that he is still here in the house since I know he travelled with my own children's Christmas plush toys.

I enjoyed Springbok's Ziggy on Safari jigsaw puzzle. It had a little bit of Ziggy and a lot of the wildlife you would see if you went on safari in Africa. At 500 pieces it was not too challenging, nor was it too easy. As I edit this post, it is a bit hard to find but you can check on eBay by following this link to see if it is currently available.
