WHAT'S THE HISTORY OF THE FANNY PACK?

Fanny packs were huge in the 1980s & 1990s and are enjoying a comeback now.

For those who don’t know, a fanny pack is, quite simply, a bag that originally was worn fastened around your waist but which can also be draped across your upper body. The bag is, however, known by many other names including waist pouch, hip pack, belt bag and bum bag. If I recall correctly, I reluctantly called mine a fanny pack so that is what I will call them here on this page.

According to The Globe and Mail, Adweek Magazine declared fanny packs as “the hottest product of the year” in 1988 and yes, I used one during their height of their popularity in the 1980s and 1990s. As a matter of fact, I still own my original fanny pack though I have not worn it in a long time because it is a bit big and was, for many years, out of style.

Mine original pack is blue, made by XYZ and of a rather simple design. It is not interesting at all like the vintage Jansport, Patagonia or Spyder waist pouches that were made in multiple color combinations and that are available now.

I think that these bags really are a great product keeping what you needed at hand and relieving your shoulders from having to carry a purse. It was interesting, therefore, when I discovered that they, in both new and vintage styles, have recently had a resurgence in popularity.

FAMOUS MOMENTS

Fanny packs have definitely had their share of moments in the limelight.   In the 1990s, on Seinfeld George said of a fanny pack that it "looks like your belt is digesting a small animal.” In 1996, Dwayne Johnson "The Rock" wore a fanny pack in a Vogue magazine article. That picture has never been forgotten. In 2015, actor Jared Leto was photographed wearing a fanny pack on the beach and went on to sell them on his brand’s website. In 2017, Leonardo DiCaprio wore one on his vacation in Thailand.

Whether you call them fanny packs, waist pouches, hip packs, belt bags or bum bags, learn more about their story here.

VINTAGE OR NEW

You can have your choice from eBay of a vintage fanny pack by clicking here or of a new fanny pack by clicking here. I was somewhat surprised that in line with the current popularity of everything 1990s, brands like Louis Vuitton, Versace, Burberry, Gucci, Nike and Saint Laurent have all issued waist pouches though I know Roots Canada has been producing simple, leather waist pouches for at least a decade because I carry one of them.

Do you wear a fanny pack and, if so, what do you call it?

Whatever it is,
you can get it on eBay!

Dazey LA for Anthropologie Coffee Mug

LOVE MORE Dazey LA for Anthropologie Coffee Mug

I love this retired coffee mug that Dazey LA designed exclusively for Anthropologie. I love the simple message, Love More, and the vintage-style or retro theme.

The company Dazey LA is owned by a woman named Dani who aims, according to Anthropologie, to "empower today's woman by encouraging conversations on self-care, women's rights, and inclusivity through energetic art, apparel, and lifestyle collections."

Dani, who you may or may not have heard of, is an artist, graphic designer, textile designer, interior designer and fashion designer who has created pieces for companies like Anthropologie, Hot Topic, Torrid, Urban Outfitters and Macy's. Forbes magazine calls her designs "cheeky and feminist-leaning" and I agree. Though I am older than I expect is her target market, I do enjoy her designs.

Her mugs are dishwasher and microwave safe and this Love More cup will hold 14.5 ounces of your favorite steamy, hot beverage. It measures 3 1/4 inches tall by 3 3/4 inches in diameter excluding the handle. It features a white speckled finish on the exterior and a warm, yellow or amber speckled finish on the interior.

The simple message, "Love More" encourages happiness and positivity. The design evokes feelings of peace, love and harmony from the 1960s and 1970s. Though now discontinued, Dazey LA mugs like this one are available on eBay by clicking right here.

31 DAYS OF COFFEE MUGS: Personaliteas Mug (2020)

For day THREE of the 31 DAYS OF COFFEE MUGS, I bring you a novel-tea. That is, a fine bone china mug from artist Jumble Sailor in a design called Personaliteas. It’s perfect for anyone who loves their tea in a mug, like me!

The design on the mug was Jumble Sailor’s entry into a tea towel design competition by ToDryFor’s tea towel competition in the United Kingdom. It is made by Beast in Show and available through Jumble Sailor’s Etsy store.

Vintage inspired, I love the illustrations. You can drink your cuppa tea with Camilla Chamomile, Olly Oolong, Brian Breakfast and friends and of course, I won’t tell if you put coffee in your mug. The design is all around the mug and even features a friend called Rosy Lee in the bottom. She’s there reading the leaves whether or not you used tea leaves (or even drank tea).

This mug is a unique gift idea for the tea lover in your life. It is hand decorated in a winning combination of light blue and deep red in Stoke on Trent in the United Kingdom. It measures 3 1/2 inches (9 cms) deep by 3 1/3 inches (8.4 cms) wide and is microwave and dishwasher safe.

This mug has so much personality! Find your personaliteas mug on Etsy by clicking here and don’t miss the matching tea towel while you’re there.

Vintage Hawaiian T-Shirt

Vintage Hawaiian T-Shirt

It is no secret around my home that I love Hawaii. I always have and I always will. I have been privileged to visit twice and I would love to go back.

My love of Hawaii translates directly into a love of Hawaiian things like this amazing vintage t-shirt. It is from the 1970s. In size small, it might actually fit me, LOL. Since it is a vintage shirt, it is helpful that the Etsy seller shares the fact that the chest is 38 inches.

I think it is perfect despite the obvious flaw on the image. (The scrape on the black hair.) This tee definitely has a Hawaiian islands feel to it and it also shares a retro, boho and maybe even hippie vibe. None of those things really describes my style but I love this shirt anyway.

You will find ShannonMyIndi's vintage t-shirts on Etsy by clicking right here. Of course, if it is not a vintage t-shirt you are after, you might enjoy looking at huge selection of other vintage pieces.

Aloha,
Brenda!

How About A Nice Hawaiian Punch?

How About A Nice Hawaiian Punch?
"How About A Nice Hawaiian Punch?" asks Punchy...

Take a trip back with me to a place where the tradewinds blow, where the pace is calm and where the Hawaiian punch flowed or if a bit of realism is required, to my home in Canada one hot summer day in the late 1960s on grocery day when my Mom served one of those big cans of ice cold Hawaiian Punch...

How about a nice Hawaiian Punch? Do YOU remember Hawaiian Punch? Do you remember the mascot, PUNCHY?

I do and I'd have to say he is firmly entrenched in the memories of my childhood. Hawaiian punch anyone? Take a little summer trip with me and learn a bit about the history of Hawaiian Punch and Punchy, find some links to more reading and some links to collectible and vintage merchandise celebrating Hawaiian Punch, the beverage of my childhood. Don't miss the videos. They are definitely not high definition but they will take you on a trip back in time. We did not drink pop when I was growing up, it was a very rare treat. Instead we drank Hawaiian Punch. How about you?

What is Hawaiian Punch?

Vintage Hawaiian Punch Tin CanHawaiian Punch is a fruit punch drink with 5 percent real fruit juice that is now owned by the Dr Pepper Snapple Group, Inc. It was originally invented by A.W. Leo, Tom Yates and Ralph Harrison as an ice cream sauce in 1934 and was later made into a tasty drink when it was mixed with water.

In 1934 Hawaiian Punch was developed in California in a garage and in 1950 the 46 ounce can was distributed to grocery stores. Punchy was born in December of 1961 and appeared in his first television commercial in 1962.

In 1999, Dr. Pepper/Seven Up purchased Hawaiian Punch and thought of re-using the Punchy mascot. It was thought that Punchy was a rather violent character for a product aimed at youth since his reputation is based on his punch. Great consideration was given to see how or even if Punchy could be used in a less offensive manner. Teenagers remembered the original version of Punchy which meant that he was still a valuable asset to the company. It was determined that his main appeal was his uniqueness and his punch which was not so much an act of violence as a metaphor for overwhelming refreshment.

In 2003, Punchy had a makeover to appeal more to the youth of the day.
