What to do with tough Tupperware lids that won't go on?

What to do with tough Tupperware lids that won't go on.

Are your Tupperware lids, or seals as Tupperware prefers to call them, too tight?

Tupperware makes very snug seals that are designed to keep liquid in and yes, the seals often are a struggle to put on. Even my husband who has very strong hands could not close the seals on the Big Wonder bowls shown in this picture.

I agree with some that it is a shame when you buy an expensive, new product that you have to make an adjustment to make it work but nevertheless, if you like Tupperware and are willing to employ a work around in order to be able to use it, these two ideas will help. I had to use the first solution to get the lids on my bowls!

First, you can soak your seal in hot soapy water for about ten minutes, dry it and then put it on the piece in question. Leave it on the piece for 24 hours, which helps the seal relax a bit and makes it easier to put on in the future.

As this video from Tupperware says, you can also wash the seals on the top shelf of your dishwasher in order to make them more manageable.

I hope this information helps with those pesky new Tupperware pieces!

How To Clean Stuffed Animals

It almost goes without saying that sometimes you just have to wash a plush toy. Sometimes plush toys live a rough life. They may experience a case of the stomach flu, they may be dusty from being on a shelf and unloved or they may have experienced too much love. They may have had the unfortunate experience of coming in touch with lice or other critters or they may need to be kept very clean for children with allergies and asthma. That’s a short list, I am sure you can think of more reasons you need to wash your plush toys.

Can You Wash Plush Toys?

Yes, you can but proceed with caution and consider the following:

I would NOT wash an extremely valuable item, a very old one, an item that my child cannot live without or an item that is damaged or coming apart in anyway.

A child I know cherished a bear called Mr. Bear and Mr. Bear is still treasured but no longer slept with. Mr. Bear would dearly love to hop in the washer but he is literally falling apart and he would come out in tiny bits so there is no way that Mr. Bear is ever going to be washed in the laundry machine again. As a matter of fact, he is so beloved and in such rough condition, that he will spend the rest of his days tucked safely in a shoe box in the closet.

In the case of a stuffed animal that your child cannot live without, I recommend buying another identical one and putting it aside. Preparing in this way will save a lot of grief if you lose the treasured item and will also give you another one as a back up if your child wears out the first one. In the case of Mr. Bear, we had two additional bears. One was identical and one was smaller. When we used them, our son was old enough to know the difference but he still loved them and they helped the precious Mr. Bear survive a bit longer.

I would also not wash items that have clothes or parts made of non-plush fabrics that seem a bit like plastic and that are pretending to be suede or leather, unless those elements can be removed. They do not stand up to washing and in my experience, shred. The outfit and eye apparatus seen on this Star Trek Borg plush teddy bear would not wash well.

Read the care instructions. Although I do not always follow the instructions, they are a good place to start. Most manufacturers recommend surface washing only with mild soap and a damp cloth. You can certainly try that with your plush toys but sometimes a stuffed animal just needs more cleaning than that and you might be happy to know that many soft toys may survive machine washing and will stand up to a trip through the washer.

If your stuffed animal includes excelsior, styrene foam or any foam material, they cannot be washed.

If a stuffed animal has joints or cardboard, it cannot be washed in the washer.

If it is musical or talks, it cannot be washed unless the music box is removable. I have not washed this gorgeous Mattel's I Talk Tigger. They are simply precious when hugged and, of course, the talking boxes would not stand up to being washed.

I have not tried to wash a Beanie Babies yet but have read that items stuffed with small foam balls in them cannot be washed.

Large animals can be washed but the filling may shift. I have not had that happen to any plush toy I washed and have had considerable success with large stuffed animals like an 80-inch long Innovage centipede, a 22-inch My First Puppy by Russ and a Disney Store Ojo plush bear from the Big Blue House.

If your plush has hard plastic elements, like the ping pong ball shaped eyes that sometimes appear on Sesame Street's Elmo, consider placing the toy in a pillowcase, which may help protect the plastic parts. This is not 100 percent foolproof but if it does not work totally, it should minimize the damage of the washing machine and the dryer.

If you can, use a delicate cycle on your washing machine. I use regular laundry detergent though I have read that fabric softener can also be used for plush and that it will make the plush extra soft.

I use hot water when I want to be sure a stuffed animal is clean but I have read that hot water can weaken the glue that holds items like eyes in place so be aware.

Can You Dry A Soft Animal?

Once again the answer is yes, sort of. Some stuffed animals dry well, more likely if their plush is short. Fluffy plush tends to change texture in the dryer. In any case, I find air drying a safer method because there is no heat to possibly melt or alter the fur. I actually have an air dry cycle on my dryer, which I use very successfully. The soft fluffy mane on the Gund Lion ‘Casey’ shown above responded extremely well to air drying but I know from another experience less successful experience that his soft and fluffy mane would have been destroyed by the heat of a dryer.

Sometimes toys that have been washed loose their new look and, of course, the more you wash them, the more that look will fade. However, I have washed many soft toys that came out of the process looking better than when they went in and, in any case, at least they will look clean!

31 DAYS OF COFFEE MUGS: How to Use a Coffee Mug Properly

Just when you though you had seen it all here's a fabulous tongue-in-cheek vintage How To video from YouTube It's called Proper Mug Utilization for the Home and Workplace and demonstrates clearly how to use your coffee mug properly. You will want to watch carefully so that you learn and are able to remember the mnemonic device for proper mug utilization.

I offer this video and the included lesson as the 17th post in my 31 DAYS OF COFFEE MUGS series and I know that it will give you a chuckle. So without further ado, here's the video:

The video is by the Unemployed Philospher's Guild, who have created some fantastic mugs like the handsome moustaches mug, the disappearing Cheshire Cat Alice in Wonderland mug and the smart mathematical formula mug shown on this page.  They are also the folks who created the Movie quotes mug as seen on yesterday's post here. To see all of the Unemployed Philospher's Guild mugs on Amazon, click here.

As the folks from the Philosopher Guild say,

"Enjoy your mug. If you cannot enjoy your mug, what business have you owning one?

Employ the mnemonic device and you will enjoy mugs for years to come."

How To Replace A Broken Coffee Mug on eBay

How To Replace A Broken Coffee Mug on eBay
Mug Emergency! I often receive a question about how to locate a specific mug, especially after a much beloved mug has been broken.

In June, I received a message from a desperate man. He was in the middle of a just such a mug emergency and he said:

"Help! I've just chipped my fiancée's favourite Whittards mug. She's had it for maybe eight or nine years. It has stars on it, it is blue on the inside... If you could find said mug - I can send a picture - I would be willing to pay... If not, any advice would be gratefully appreciated."

I sell a lot of mugs on eBay and have written about them here on this blog and on social media. In this case, Thomas found my page about Whittard of Chelsea mugs and wrote to me hopeful that I might actually have a replacement coffee mug to sell to him.

Unfortunately for both Thomas and his fiancée, I do not have any Whittard mugs in my eBay store. Truth be told, I have three in my cupboard including a replacement for the broken one shown here in this image.  Whittard of Chelsea mugs really are so nice that any that I find to sell usually wind-up taking up home in my personal coffee mug collection.

So I told Thomas what I often tell others, and that is to set up a saved search on eBay. Once you have done so, eBay will search every day for the item you are looking for and send you a notification when one becomes available.  For this to be a reasonable option, you have to be able to narrow down your search so that eBay doesn't turn up hundreds of mugs every day.

Here's what I told Thomas to do. You can do the same, changing the search words to words related to the mug that you are searching for.

HOW TO CREATE A SAVED SEARCH ON EBAY:
  1. Start by searching for the mug that you are looking for -- in Thomas' case, I would use "whittard mug blue stars" -- without the quotation marks.
  2. Then you will see a button called "Follow this search." Click on that button and check the little box to have eBay send you an email if one becomes available.
It really is that simple. The hardest part is manipulating eBay's search to turn up a reasonable (small) number of results.  Try the most important search words first and, if that brings too many eBay results, add another one.  I do not recommend using the word coffee because some sellers sell mugs without actually saying coffee mug.

When I broke my mug, it took me about six months to replace it.  That is because there are not many Whittard mugs available in North America. They are sold in the United Kingdom and few find there way to North America. In the end I paid a bit of a premium for my replacement mug because it was located in England and I live in Canada and because shipping is expensive but it was worth it because I really do love my Whittard of Chelsea coffee mug.  If you have a mug that you love as much as I love mine, you might even consider buying a replacement before you break it, which is what I wish I had done!

Good luck replacing your broken coffee mug! Of course, this method would work for any coffee mug you have seen and want to add to your collection and for almost any product that you are trying to find.

How To Clean Your Gremlin Gizmo Plush Toy Pillow

How To Clean Your Gremlin Gizmo Plush Toy PillowI'm not sure why the Gremlins Gizmo or "Giz" as he is sometimes called is eternally popular but he is. I guess it might be because he's furry and cute, he's not wicked and he's quite smart being very talented with electrical devices and weaponry. Of course, that makes sense because a "gizmo" is actually another word for a gadget...

Anyway, I digress. This page wasn't meant to be a biography of Gizmo but rather a helpful page about how to wash your giant stuffed plush Gizmo.  He's pretty big, measuring about 20 inches across, which adds another complication when you're trying to figure out how to clean him.

Those who own this Gizmo, love him a lot, which means he is often in desperate need of being cleaned. Mine was actually in very good condition and clean but I washed him anyway since I like knowing that all of the plush toys in my home and in my eBay store are clean and fresh.

Anyway, a friendly query arrived in my email last month from Amanda in the United Kingdom. She called her question cheeky but I did not really consider it so. Besides, I am always happy to answer any friendly cheeky question!

Amanda said that she has a Gizmo pillow desperately in need of a cleaning so I shared my experience with her of how I cleaned my Gizmo. My answer is shown below but please don't take it as a guarantee. It is what I did with my Gizmo and what I have done with countless other plush toys but of course there is no telling what might happen when you wash yours...

If Gizmo will fit in your washing machine, you should be able to wash him in there.  I washed my Gizmo in my slightly-oversized washer with hot water. Choose a gentle cycle, if you can, though I cannot remember if that is what I did and throw something in like a towel or two to counter the weight. If Gizmo doesn't fit in your machine, I would take him to a laundromat (a coin-operated laundry facility) where they usually have an oversized washer.

I air dried him in my dryer which has actually has a setting called 'air' that is perfect for stuffed animals when you don't know how their fur will react to the heat of a dryer.  I actually may have dried him with heat because I often forget to use the air cycle, though I cannot really remember. I do know that some plush fur, particularly long, fluffy fur, like that around Gizmo's eye sometimes cannot tolerate the heat of a dryer so I recommend using an air cycle if you can.

If you're washing your Gizmo, I wish you luck! If you're interested in buying a plush Gremlin Gizmo pillow on eBay, just click here.

How To Make Money Selling on eBay

How To Make Money Selling on eBay
The 2014 version of "My eBay Sales Suck" has a much friendlier title that its predecessor: eBay 2014 Why You Are Not Selling Anything on eBay and What You Can Do About It. It is available from Amazon as an eBook for under $5 or a paperback book for under $15.

I read it along time ago and I need to revisit the 2014 version before I can vouch for it. However, for some insight you can check out the Amazon customer reviews.

And in case you don't know, you do not have to have a Kindle eReader to access a Kindle book. I read my Kindle books on my iPhone and on my computer.  It's definitely not an ideal way to read a book but it is definitely doable.

Edited in 2019 to add that eBay changes very quickly. There still may be value in reading an older book but you are probably better off with newer publications, which given the ever changing nature of eBay are out of date almost before they are published!

How To Buy & Sell Jigsaw Puzzles on eBay

How To Buy & Sell Jigsaw Puzzles on eBay

To sell jigsaw puzzles or not to sell jigsaw puzzles on eBay, that is the question. I do but I proceed with caution...

I DO SELL NEW PUZZLES that are still in their factory sealed packaging. Sometimes that box and/or the plastic wrap may have shelfwear and damage likely rendering it unsuitable for a buyer who wants a puzzle as a gift but making it guaranteed complete for any jigsaw puzzler who wants to add a certain puzzle to his or her collection.  As a Canadian eBay seller, I am particularly careful to purchase puzzles that are more valuable or rare because otherwise the cost of shipping a puzzle can be as much as the value of a puzzle, which is not a good combination.

I DO SELL USED PUZZLES that my family has worked. Working a puzzle for the sake of selling it would definitely NOT be profitable. It takes many hours to complete a large puzzle and the return on time spent would be poor. However, my family enjoys working jigsaw puzzles. I leave a puzzle out on the coffee table and when someone is in the mood, he or she will stop for a few moments and put a few pieces in place.

I DO NOT USUALLY SELL PUZZLES that are opened and that we have not worked.  That means I leave a lot of interesting puzzles behind. However, since I sell on eBay, where a seller's reputation is such an important part of how a buyer finds your item and whether or not he chooses to buy from you, I am unwilling to list a jigsaw puzzle that I cannot guarantee is complete.

How about you? Do you sell jigsaw puzzles? New ones? Used ones?

Or maybe you are a buyer of jigsaw puzzles, in which case we would love to hear your thoughts on buying puzzles, particularly used ones. Do you buy them if they have been opened? If a seller cannot guarantee that they are complete? Or perhaps you only buy sealed puzzles?
